Wind power in Africa
Africa has 11.5 GW of wind farms turning, 0.9% of the world's, and 85% of them stand in three places: South Africa, Egypt and Morocco with Western Sahara.
- 1.9 GW
- of wind added in 2025, Africa's biggest year yet: capacity rose 20% to 11.5 GW (Ember)
- 3.9 GW
- being built, in 21 farms, on the register's check of the big units and GEM's status for the rest; GEM alone lists 20.0 GW
- 154 GW
- more on paper, announced or in pre-construction: 67% of it is meant for hydrogen, ammonia or export
- 36%
- mean capacity factor of Africa's turbines, 2023–2025; Kenya's reach 56% (Ember)
Another 154 GW is announced or in pre-construction, on GEM's list as this register corrected it, and 67% of that is for hydrogen, ammonia or export schemes; of the units of 200 MW and more, 1.2% has financing or construction on record. The business that is real runs in two places: South Africa's private market, where mines and refineries now buy wind directly, and Egypt's Gulf of Suez, where Gulf, Japanese and European money builds farms of 500 MW and more, increasingly with Chinese turbines.
